Clinical

Utilizing Informatics for Improving Health Care Delivery

Precision Genomic Medicine

Our team leads clinical bioinformatics at UF Health Pathology Laboratories. We develop custom genotyping and next-generation sequencing (NGS) clinical assays, clinical grade bioinformatics data analysis & management workflows, and solutions for integrating genomic data into lab information systems (LIS) and electronic health records (EHR). Our current precision medicine assays include detection of SNVs, Translocations, CNVs, and MSIs in clinical oncology and pharmacogenomics tests. Our group has developed and is currently adding new functionalities to an in-house web application called “DNAVault”, which houses genomic variant data from UF Health genomic medicine tests. DNAVault is currently being used for clinical quality control by our molecular pathologists and clinical staff through a web-based interface for data retrieval. Our group is working on UF wide effort to consolidate clinical genomic data for research purposes after implementing appropriate consenting and de-identification processes. We are also working on a research project involving prototyping HL7 FHIR-enabled Genomic Data Server.

Clinical Data Analytics

Our team uses data science techniques for aggregating and mining pathology laboratory data for tracking and improving laboratory test utilization, send-out test management, specimen logistics, clinical testing reimbursements, resource management, test volumes, business opportunities, and quality improvement research. These dashboards and reports are being used by administrative, operational, and research faculty and staff for tracking and improving laboratory test utilization, send-out test management, specimen logistics, clinical testing reimbursements, resource management, test volumes, business opportunities, and quality improvement research.

Clinical Laboratory Informatics

Our group works on identifying gaps in pathology workflows and delivering efficient informatics solutions. We currently provide guidance at UF in the following areas: (1) implementation of various lab tests and work flows in lab information systems (LIS) – EPIC Beaker, (2) laboratory data exchange interfaces between internal and external electronic health systems, and (3) laboratory data harmonization.
